Friday night with the fantastic Esteban Card melding ancestral drumming music from Colombia in a contemporary context, with support from Dembis Thioung, maestro of the dunduns, the melodic and hypnotic West African bass drums, and guests the Somos Chibchas dancing band!
Headliner Esteban Card presents a distinctive twist on folkloric Colombian music, his innovative mixture of ancestral chants and drumming with organic contemporary sounds representing a forward-facing musical identity with a trance-inducing soundscape. Card’s music channels Colombia’s African heritage via Bullerengue with a thought-provoking modern-day awareness. His AfroColombiaBeat production stamp has been embraced by audiences across the UK and met with critical acclaim by tastemakers Gilles Peterson and Alex Wharton.
Somos Chibchas Arts are a folk dance school preserving, showcasing and sharing Colombia’s rich culture through ancestral traditions, woven with Indigenous and African roots, safeguarding our ancestral legacy
Opening the night, Dembis Thioung is a mesmerizing master of the dunduns, the melodic and hypnotic West African bass drums. The traditional West African Dundun are a set of three double-sided drums hit with sticks made by wood and cowskin that make up the HEARTBEAT, the MELODY and the SOUL of traditional West African ensemble djembe music. However Dembis’s skills as a percussionist are not reserved for West African rhythms alone. He is also a versatile independent performing artist and has played live and recorded albums with internationally acclaimed artists including Carlou D and Baaba Mal.
There will also be Live Painting from Colombian artist and designer Vane MG. Painting, Street Art and Digital Illustration are some of the mediums Vane uses. Her work is characterised by bright and neon colours and includes elements of her Colombian roots, fun elements of her Toy Design experience. Her characteristic Heart Eyes on her realistic female portraits are full of more hearts and London vibrations.
Jamboree food option: Our ‘Arepatoire’ kitchen is open from 6pm serving a delicious mix of Italian/Colombian food for you to enjoy a pre-gig meal/snack if you wish! Find the menu HERE!
