Cretan music is wild and unpredictable, markedly different to the disciplined bouzouki music of the Greek mainland, with brief melodic lines, simple grooves and steady tempos often creating a feeling approaching the ecstatic. It is an expression of minimalism in music long before it became a recognised genre.
