Live 1920s and ’30s jazz and swing. This week Ewan Bleach plays with the brilliant Frog and Henry! The night will begin with the first of a 4-week (optional) ballroom tango class hosted by Raymond Root, with live piano accompaniment from Ewan.
Formed in New Orleans as a collective of several street performing groups, Frog and Henry perform and record old dance and jazz music from the early 1900s on brass and string instruments, with several singers and vocal harmony. Most of the band’s repertoire was obtained by digging up forgotten songs from the dawn of recorded music, in the form of early dance tunes, and from even earlier 19th century sheet music. They’ve also designed a foot-operated tuba that allows one person to play tuba and six-string banjo simultaneously!
Ballroom Tango – 4-Week Course With Raymond Root
Ballroom tango is a partnered dance, but you don’t have to come as a pair, we’ll be rotating partners through the class. Tango was one of the first dances to bring couples together and is likely one of the reasons that it has been so popular in different areas all over the world. Because of its acceptance in global cultures, there are now numerous styles of Tango, including Ballroom Tango. Ballroom Tango is very theatrical. The very purpose of this style is to make adjudication at competitions easier and to perform for audiences. Therefore, the style has changed little over the past several decades. The steps are based on specific patterns and are very stylised.
