ARTISTES
Najma Akhtar presents her ‘Five Rivers Project’. Akhtar, playing this night with her band, introduces jazz to the traditional genre of the Ghazal (Urdu ballad) and Sufi sounds, also combining Delta blues, Celtic and folk-rock with her deep Indian roots.
Ian Saville – For more than 30 years, Ian Saville has been presenting his Marxist Magic and ventriloquism. Whereas David Copperfield is content with little tricks like making the Statue of Liberty disappear, Ian Saville aims at the much more ambitious goal of making International Capitalism and exploitation disappear. True, he hasn’t quite succeeded, but he keeps on trying.
Mark Duncan – Through the alias of Monsieur Mu, Mark invites you to laugh at the quirks, battles and difficulties of life through the medium of mime. He is also an actor, producer and artistic director of Cornucopia Theatre Company. He has performed mime theatre in many parts of the world.
Hailey Tuck – Born in Austin, Texas, and raised on a diet of 1930’s jazz, vintage dresses and black and white films, Hailey’s love of the old school saw her move to France aged just 18 in search of ‘la vie en rose’ where she is a favourite on the underground Parisian scene. Named as one of Yahoo! Music’s ‘top singer-song writers under 25 to watch’, Hailey evokes her very own 21st Century ‘Belle Époque.
Farce Forward – International Clown company Farce Forward perform a compilation of scenes from their latest Fringe show- ‘One Man Two Ghosts’, their ridiculous adaptation of Noel Cowards- Blithe Spirit as told by three complete idiots.
HOAX is a company of theatre makers giving a voice to social and ecological issues. ‘How to Survive the End’, is a short guide to weathering stormy situations. Join Liz as she shares her pearls of wisdom from her 1930s days in Canada’s Christie Pit riots and London’s Cable Street battle to help you survive the battles ahead.
Compere – Dane Lukic is a ¾ academic and ¼ dancer/performer/actor with a passion for creating collaborative, engaging and interactive performances. He is originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina and came to live in Shadwell in 2013 when he became fascinated with the diversity and the history of the area. Dane’s performance work includes dance, character work, movement, physical theatre and walkabouts. His artistic mission is to enable people to grow, love and do everything 5% more.

BEYOND THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET
The Battle of Cable Street Anniversary Cabaret Special! has been organised by Cornucopia Theatre Company and Jamboree with support from Tower Hamlets Council to help commemorate the 80th anniversary of the ‘Battle’.
On October 4th 1936, Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists attempted to march through the streets of East London. Although the march had permission from the Home Secretary and massive support from the police, the local Eastenders united in opposition and succeeded in turning the fascist ‘Blackshirts’ march back. This event has gone down in history as the Battle of Cable Street.
This event was parallel to what was happening in Europe at that time – fascist dictatorships in Italy and Portugal, the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, the rise of Hitler – and the dangers and consequences of nationalism and racial or religious intolerance. Our cabaret is a celebration as we remember the rallying call of the people united against the fascists, ‘No pasaram!’ – ‘They shall not pass!’ We invite you to celebrate the diverse range of London’s communities, unity through cultural expression and to ask what does this ‘battle’ mean to you today?
