They unite youthful vitality with training and experience across diverse musical worlds, including early music, jazz, classical and folk, in freshly inventive arrangements of trad-based material.
The band have just recorded their debut EP, with a UK release tour scheduled for April 2016. After succession of recent performances at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including Celtic Connections Festival and Cecil Sharp House, they look set to firmly establish themselves on the folk music scene.
Ellie Rose Rusbridge’s music is intricate in detail, rich and playful in melody and though sometimes bleak, always optimistic in sentiment. Her songs are intrigued by shadows; the shadows of those around her and the shadow of herself. These elements are woven together with careful instrumental arrangements and a direct and honest delivery, most notably in Trick and Laurell’s Song form her forthcoming album ‘Night Becoming’.
Born to classical and folk musicians, she was brought up singing everything form German Leider to Gaelic ditties and English Madrigals. These worlds strongly informed her musical taste and sparked her first attempts at songwriting aged 10. Her Bristol adolescence was sound-tracked by heroines Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Martha Wainwright with the occasional foray into the sparser electronic sound-worlds of Radiohead and Massive Attack. The eclecticism in her taste development at SOAS studying Music and Social Anthropology as she began to gig regularly in London.
