KLEZMATIZE
Emma Stiman (clarinet) and John Sikorski (accordion) are both internationally acclaimed Klezmer musicians in their own right. Now they combine their vast experience to bring you an evening of virtuosic music full of stylish humour and contemplation.
“I can’t believe they make such a big sound – you forget they’re only two people!”
“A lively evening of Klezmer, the performers drove the dances in a perfect blend of rhythm and swaying melody. The clarinet’s human voice spoke of a culture both ancient and live.”

With roots from the 15th century, Klezmer is the instrumental music of theAshkenazi Jews. From prayer melodies sung in Jewish modes (shtaygerim) and influenced by the folk cultures of the countries that surrounded them, Klezmer, which is celebratory wedding music, formed the perfect stepping stone between the sacred and secular worlds.
Jewish music is at the heartbeat of its community, expressing the joys, celebrations and aching despair of human life. With its bittersweet melodies and instrumentation, Klezmer is full of the passion of the laughing and crying human voice. It has unified and uplifts the spirits of the Ashkenazi people over the centuries.
