Merlin Shepherd is one of the world’s leading players of traditional East European Klezmer Clarinet style. For the next seven weeks he will be planting passionate and inspired Jewish music into the Jamboree pot and hosting a series of performances by London’s best Jewish music groups. The evening will continue with a jam session and dance party where you can join in the many traditional cultural dances of east European Jewish music.
With roots from the 15th century, Klezmer is the instrumental music of the Ashkenazi Jews. From prayer melodies sung in Jewish modes (shtaygerim) and influenced by the folk cultures of the countries that surrounded them, Klezmer, which is essentially wedding music, formed the perfect stepping stone between the sacred and secular worlds.
Jewish music has always formed the heartbeat of its community. It accompanies the joys, celebrations and aching despair of human life. With its the bittersweet melodies and instrumentation, Klezmer is full of the passion of the laughing and crying human voice. It takes the listeners to a place of unity that has maintained the spirit of the Ashkenazi people over the centuries. Join us in this celebratory summer of Wednesday nights at Jamboree.
