A special Wednesday night with The Pegwells playing the old time tunes of the American south.
Formed in 2021 by Bianca Wilson (banjos) and Rebekah Bouche (guitar) as a way to claim space in a scene that marginalises non-male and non-white people, they exist to expand ingrained ideas of who this music belongs to and why; highlighting and dismantling the erasure of black contribution to traditional banjo and fiddle music. The band are on a mission to embody a fuller, more honest history that tracks the heritage of these tunes back to West Africa as well as here to the British Isles. Through this act of reclamation, their aim is to re-establish this music we love as a site and means of radical inclusion. Folk for the folk!
With 45s at the ready, Bee and Bouche will also be bringing the best of their collections between sets and at the end of the night, spinning everything from country to soul, through disco and reggae.
They are joined on the bill by Vodka Terry, a self-taught harpist and chronic silly-billy with disgustingly honest lyrics and a big dollop of humanity. Expect intricate, wonky, spooky folk jazz interlaced with tender dark comedy.
